History of Banking Scheme in Nigeria.

This dates back to the colonial era. Colonia Banks were set up by the colonial government which met [its commercial objectives. In 1892, British West Africa and African Banking Corporation were created as the first banking establishment in Nigeria. Later, they joined together and transformed into the present-day First Bank of Nigeria. In 1925, Barclays Bank came about through the joining of National Bank of South Africa and Anglo-Egyptian Bank. In 1948, the British and French Bank for Commerce and Industry started business and later advanced into the present-day United Bank for Africa.

Nigeria’s first domestic bank named Industrial and Commercial bank was founded in 1929. The bank was replaced in subsequent years by the Merchant Bank following its breakdown in 1930. Also, after the breakdown of the Industrial and Commercial Bank was followed by establishment of the African Continental Bank in 1949. The African Continental Bank acted as the only indigenous bank in Nigeria. In 1947, the Nigerian Farmers and Commercial was generated for agricultural development.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was established in 1959 and has maintained its importance as the highest banking authority in Nigeria. CBN functions are aimed at regulating the economy of Nigeria and reworking the structure of the Nigerian banking system. The reworking of the Universal Banking Model was done by CBN in 2010. The Universal Banking Model is a system that permits anyone who has the commercial banking license to use selected subsidiaries in carrying out direct or indirect banking operations. By douth of this system, banking licenses have been classified into three:

  • Specialized/Development Banking License
  • Merchant Banking License
  • Commercial Banking License

Qualifications and Recruitments for Banking Jobs.

Banking jobs in Nigeria are for those who hope to be good in what they do, because the banking sector is very competitive. Being good on the job requires commitment, loyalty and passion; any sign of weakness’ can place you on the sideline.

The major forms of recruitment obtainable in the industry are:

  1. Executive Trainee(ET)
  2. Experienced Hire

The groups of participants consisting of new graduates not above 26years of age are referred to as Executive Trainees. In Nigeria, a banking carrier begins from this level.


To be qualified to apply as an ET, you must have the following requirements:

  1. Must not be above 26years of age
  2. Must have a degree (B.Sc or HND) not less than second class upper
  3. Must have gone through NYSC
  4. Must have good communication skills
  5. Must be smart and young


This is when a banker is switching to another bank. The process is not the same with the executive trainee; this is because they are already in the system with some years of experience.

The qualifications are:

  • Must have Bachelors degree or HND (second class upper)
  • Must have additional qualification is an added advantage
  • Must have some years of banking experience
  • Must be cleared from the previous bank

You have passed the first step if you have the above requirements. The second step involves the preparation of Curriculum Vitae (CV) and an application letter that will portray you better. Use a professional email address for the CV, e.g. [email protected] and not [email protected]. Crosscheck your date of birth with that of your WAEC certificate.


There are different avenues one can submit applications, in this digital era all banks have a human resources page on their websites that accepts job applications. There are times were it has to be hard copy in designated branches. Again it depends on the need and the sense of urgency. The key here is to get the right information at the appropriate time.

After application the application has been submitted, the bank might take some time to contact you for an interview, be it oral or written. Either step that comes first depends on the urgency of the process. There are situations where written test will be bypassed and it may just be oral interviews. Make sure to keep your phones and emails on and recharged at this stage.


After the interviews, successful candidates are enlisted for the bank’s training school, which is usually between 3 to 6months depending on the bank. During this period the bank will train you on their processes and equip you with knowledge on how to be competitive in the industry. There are also series of examinations and written test in the school, failing any test or exam at any stage of the training may mark your exit from the process, which is why you have to be at your very best.

Successful completion of the program translates into a brand new career for you, that makes you an executive trainee (ET) of the bank and this is the starting level.

Successful candidates are usually placed one step above their current level but never below.
